My opinion: My first exposure to YamaPi was what I read on JE Secrets and JEP Cast, and based on that, I thought YamaPi was all hype - he was the most famous member of NEWS besides Ryo or something, and everyone was really just back-up to his solo act. I also heard about his "deadfish eyes" (which I don't really understand) but that is not exactly an appealing image for an idol boy, in my mind. From what I could tell, he was your typical good-looking idol, and I think maybe that's all there is to this guy: a pretty face and a hot body (dead-fish eyes notwithstanding), that somehow was just very popular with the ladies. I still sort of think that. Frankly, I still don't quite understand his appeal.

Admittedly, when I finally forced myself to watch Nobuta Wo Produce, I did fall a tiny-bit in love with Yamapi's character, and the "kon!" -- how sweet and enthusiastic and baka he was. I know a drama character is not the same as the person, but it made me slightly think better of Yamapi than just as a pretty face. So I can SORT of understand his appeal there. But is that who he really is?

Second: I don't really like his music. It feels like he's going for the "American" sound like Jin (he's best friends with Jin, so it figures), but whereas I think Jin is trying too hard to appeal to the "American" audience, I like how Yamapi also embraces the Japanese side of his music and fanbase. Which is why, despite my mixed feelings about his latest singles, I LOVED Super Good, Super Bad. It was probably one of the JE better albums of late.

So in conclusion: I don't understand Yamapi's appeal: he has nice hair, and a nice bod, but so do 90% of the other JE boys. What makes him so special? His Americanized music sort of sucks, but his Japanese singles are awesome. Sometimes I wonder if YamaPi would just break away from NEWS, like Jin did with KAT-TUN, and why he hasn't. But I think YamaPi is smarter than that. The man is on a mission to be a star, and I think he's already almost there. Which I'm sure makes his fangirls happy.

Rachael here~~

I have a love/hate relationship with Yamapi. I love him, I swear I do, but I love to hate on him more I think. He's in my list of "Top 5 Favorite Johnny's" and he used to be my favorite ((but then Koyama learned sign language, and that was the end of that)).

I have a theory that Johnny has his voice stashed away in a jar somewhere, because he sounded good on the "Daite Senorita" single, but then sounded iffy on "Loveless", and then sounded kind of back to normal on "LIVE", and then back to sounding iffy on "Super Good, Super Bad".

THEN we have his hair. I miss the "Kurosagi Movie" cut soooo much. The fugly poodle perm from "Code Blue" scarred me. For real. And I thought his hair would go back to normal after "Buzzer Beat" ((and I really liked that style, too)), but then he grew it out and then cut it awkwardly and it was just like a helmet of nasty hair on his head. He needs to stop experimenting. Or just wear a hat.

Finally, his acting. I wish they'd give him different roles other than "Hard ass doctor" or "Love sick kicked puppy" or "Revenge-seeking magician". My favorite role of his was Akira, and that always will be because that drama got me into Johnny's in the first place. His dead fish eyes kind of ruin anything else for me though. Robo!Pi needs different roles.

Even though all of the stuff above was kind of ragging on him, he's still one of my favorites. I love watching him perform because he always looks like he's enjoying what he's doing, and that makes sitting through the dead fish eyes worth it. :)

Yamashita Tomohisa

Unlike most people, I did not like YamaPi at all. I would roll my eyes EVERY TIME I see him on my computer screen. I thought Pi was such an attention hogger (which was my first impression of him, besides "wow, that dude sucks at lipsynching"). I had been a news fan for over four years, so I did have to see Pi a lot throughout the years.
Even with all that hatred I had for him, I did watch his dramas. My first Yamapi drama was Kurosagi, then Nobuta. I liked the dramas, but really didn't care for him.
Until I listened to Supergood, Superbad, I had no interest in Yamapi what-so-ever. Something about the album just drew me to liking Yamapi. When I heard the album, I felt like I had never been so impressed by Yamapi (partially because I had such low expectations for the album). And now I actually like him to the point where I'm totally stuck by his smile.
Rhey would probably find this ridiculous: I never thought Pi was hot or sexy until recently, not even when staring at the AnAn photoshoot.

Yamapi... I never think I see in him what other people do. I first saw Yamapi in Stand Up, which I watched for Nino and Oguri. I watched that entire series, and only about a year later realised that one of the other kids was Yamapi. He was extremely forgettable to me, and even catching up on his recent stuff, I couldn’t get that you guys generally said that he was your absolute favourite in JE (questions for the hosts!). I watched him in various interviews, and always thought he seemed like a boring person. I wouldn’t have focused on him at all if he wasn’t being pushed solo. One in a Million is an amazing song, but Hadakanbo was just bad. I hate to say it, but sometimes he hits on a good song and it makes up for the fact his voice really grates on me. That being said, he’s looking amazing recently, and I’m really looking forward to seeing if he’s got grit when we see Ashita no Joe. The effort he’s been putting into boxing and losing weight resonates with me, and makes me admire him a lot more as I’ve been in a similar situation recently and know how difficult it is. He seems like a good person, a hard worker and a proper idol, but I’ve never considered myself a Yamapi fan. Not saying that’s never going to change, though!

(On another note, just about as soon as you left chat for the 150th episode, I was scared how short a time it took for the conversation to turn to pure Kpop. About 2 minutes.)

Dear JEP Cast,

Thankyou for diligently recording and committing time to JE through these years. During some periods of time when I couldn't follow JE updates, this site has been the best dive-board for a quick dip into JE awesome during busy school semesters.

Yamapi to me is the ideal son, the bankable(st) talent for a jumisho, the easiest celebrity to interview, and the perfect male lead for consistent episode ratings. I adore his ever-present smile on every second of screen time he has, but I dislike being unable to identify his priorities, or the type of work he most enjoys.
